Breastfeeding Positions
Latching On From The Start

Knowing and trying some variations in breastfeeding positions helped me with feeding each of our babies. Milk production will be enhanced, sore nipples can be prevented, and most common feeding problems will no longer be a concern for you and your baby when your baby is correctly positioned on your breast, is firmly latched on and has a sealed suction.

1st few months you will be recovering from your c-section operation or your natural birth and you will be much more comfortable to feed while lying in bed. I would recommend using a large U-shaped feeding pillow for support and added comfort for both you and your baby. (Also a really great pillow during your pregnancy's last trimester for between your knees and extra belly support to get some comfortable sleep.)

The two basic types of feeding positions allows Mom to sit or lie down.

Lying Down Feeding Position
Post Birth Side Lying
  1. Turn to your side while lying in bed
  2. Both stomachs should be facing each other
  3. Your baby's head should be near your nipple
  4. Start with your lower breast
  5. Raise baby to height of nipple with a pillow
  6. Ensure clean latch on and begin feeding
  7. Raise baby with feeding pillow for upper breast
Sitting Feeding Position
Cradling
  1. Sit comfortably with full back support
  2. Drape feeding pillow around your stomach
  3. Baby rests on side, supported on the pillow facing your breast
  4. Pull your knees up to keep pillow snugly in place
  5. Add a pillow under your feeding side supporting arm
  6. Ensure clean latch on and begin feeding
  7. Switch baby to other breast and finish feeding
Football Carry
  1. Sit comfortably with full back support
  2. Drape feeding pillow around your stomach and starting feeding side
  3. Baby rests on feeding side arm facing up towards your breast
  4. Have plenty of pillow support under your supporting arm
  5. "Carry baby like a football" on your feeding side
  6. Lift your breast for positioning a clean latch on and begin feeding
  7. Switch baby to other breast and finish feeding
If your baby is starting to fall asleep, talk with them to wake them.

If this is not working, changing your baby between breast sides has always helped mine to wake up and empty the second side.

Enjoy each feeding as a bonding experience that brings you and your baby even more closely connected.

Try out these breastfeeding positions, always being sure to securely support your baby. Be patient, relax and take your time.
